1. Pharmaceutical intermediates (key feedstock for racecadotril synthesis)
Michael addition with 2-benzylacrylic acid in one step to 3-thioacetyl-2-benzylpropionic acid — dedicated upstream for antidiarrheal racecadotril; also used for thiol-containing peptides and metalloenzyme inhibitor synthesis.
2. Personal care & cosmetics (largest consumption, ~80% of output)
• Cold-wave lotion: ammonium thioglycolate cleaves keratin disulfide bonds in alkaline media for perm/straightening;
• Depilatory cream: calcium thioglycolate breaks down hair structure; used in industrial hide depilation and consumer hair-removal products.
3. PVC plastic additives
Isooctyl thioglycolate organotin salts as low-toxicity transparent PVC heat stabilizers for food packaging and water pipes; suppresses processing yellowing.
4. Polymerization aids
Chain-transfer agent in acrylic and emulsion polymerization to control molecular weight and reduce resin viscosity; auxiliary rubber vulcanization accelerator.
